A Smallholder’s harrow

Harrowing of pastureland is a job best carried out when the ground conditions are dry enough for a tractor to pass over without causing damage but before there is a risk to nests of ground-nesting birds.  Harrowing late is, also, likely to damage new grass growth.

Fordhall visit

On Saturday 5 May a group of SSG members visited Fordhall Farm. Charlotte Hollins kindly showed us around in the wind and hail and chatted happily about the trials and tribulations that she and Ben went through to purchase the farm before it was swallowed up by Müller.  Charlotte was so bubbly and enthusiastic it was a real pleasure to listen to her reminiscences.

Talking pig

Everybody is familiar with the use of the word “pig” in daily English. We have “pig sick”, or we put “lipstick on a pig”, we “cast pearls before swine” and castigate something as “hogwash”.
