Shropshire Smallholders Group

Smallholding – farming on a smaller scale

A Broody Legbar Sitting on Eggs

Not long to go now!

Shropshire Smallholders Group is a non-profit making organisation. We provide members with information and mutual support in all aspects of smallholding including animal husbandry, growing fruit & vegetables and general smallholding interests.

Our members keep a variety of livestock including chickens, geese, turkeys, sheep, goats, pigs and alpaca. Many grow fruit and vegetables, some make cheese or spin wool and make clothes from it.

Some members simply aspire to owning a smallholding, but have not achieved their dream yet. You can learn from our members and from the expert speakers at our monthly meetings at Leebotwood village hall (SY6 6NB just off the A49) where we meet on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm, except during the summer when we may have a farm visit or a trip to some other place of interest.

The usual format of a meeting is:

  • Sign in & pay for your meal if you have booked one
  • A chance to purchase raffle tickets
  • Announcements (eg goods for sale or wanted) and exchange of ideas
  • A talk by an expert guest speaker
  • The raffle draw
  • Followed by your pre-booked two course meal.

There is the Members’ Table where you can sell any smallholder items, such as eggs, chutneys, tools & crafts you have made. There is also a seed swap during the appropriate months.

To book for the talk and/or supper please contact Paula Raymond by email or by telephone on 01743 873986 or by dropping her a line at Holly Ash,
Lower Lythwood, Lyth Bank SY3 0BB.  Meals must be booked by the evening of the Sunday before the meeting.

New members are always welcome.
